Getting Married?
Congratulations and we wish you all the best as you prepare for your marriage.
The following information is provided as a guide; we would recommend that you
contact one of the Parish Team, or the celebrant of your marriage, as soon as
possible for more specific advice and information. Check the links page for more helpful sites. Marriage laws have changed from November 2007 so there is now more responsibility placed on the couples in the preparation for and registering the wedding.
1. Once you have set the date, book the Church and priest (solemniser)you wish to officiate at your ceremony. Please note that the Diocese of Killaloe does not permit Sunday weddings, unless in exceptional circumstances.Catholic Weddings can only take place in Churches and oratories approved by the Bishop.
Documents needed: Recent copy of Baptism Certificate
Confirmation Certificate
Letter of Freedom
Pre nuptial enquiry form
All these documents can be got when you are preparing for your wedding in consultation with your local parish.
2. Apply to any Registrar of Marriages for permission to marry.
The couple must make an appointment and attend in person a meeting to prepare civil requirements with the registrar. This must be done at least three months in advance. Application forms are available from the local Registrar's office at the HSE office, Tyone health Centre, Nenagh. Tel 46480/46481. List of registrars and solmnisers can be found at www.groireland.ie Documents needed include photo identity, names and date of birth of witnesses (must now be over 18), divorce decree and birth certificate where applicable. In case of illness or couples residing overseas alternative arrangements can be made for this meeting with the registrar. If a priest is coming from abroad to officiate at the wedding they will have to be placed on a temporary list of solemnisers. Contact one of the Parish team to arrange this.
3. If all is in order a Marriage Registration Form (MRF) will be issued by the registrar. The wedding cannot take place without this document. It must be carefully checked to ensure it is correct with the officiating priest. The couple are now responsible for filing this signed MRF document after the wedding.
4. A Marriage Preparation Course is essential for all marriages in the Killaloe Diocese. Such courses are organised by
ACCORD 1850 585000
Esker Retreat Centre, Athenry 091 844549
5. New State Regulation from November 7th, 2007 couples must now make a statement of no civil impediment prior to the wedding. Solemniser will advise whwn and where this can take place.
